Köln are considering keeping interim coach René Wagner beyond this season if they clinch Bundesliga survival. According to Sky Germany, the board plan to retain him for next term once safety is mathematically assured.

Köln are one win from guaranteeing another year in the top flight, with Saturday’s trip to Union Berlin one of two decisive fixtures.

To seal it this weekend, they need to win at Union Berlin and for St. Pauli to take one point or fewer at home to Mainz.

A draw could also be enough if St. Pauli lose, owing to Köln’s superior goal difference, provided Wolfsburg do not win away to Freiburg on Sunday.

Sporting director Thomas Kessler said: “What we expected from him, René has been able to put in place. That is not easy in the environment around 1. FC Köln.”

If they do not win this weekend, Köln can still keep survival in their own hands with a home game against bottom Bundesliga side Heidenheim on matchday 33.
