After a long break, FC Barcelona are set to return to UEFA Champions League action tonight as they face Newcastle United in the Round of 16. The first leg takes place at St James’ Park, with both teams eager to take control of the tie.

Ahead of this game, the manager of the Magpies appeared in front of the press, and commented on some aspects of this upcoming game.

As SPORT has reported, the English trainer recognized how important this game could be for his side:

“Yes, it could be one of the most important matches in the club’s recent history. We must rise to the occasion and understand the importance of this tie. We need to use every psychological tool possible to win.”

Howe reflected on the previous meeting between the two sides during the League phase earlier this season, a 2–1 win for Barcelona at St James’ Park. He said:

“When you go through that experience, you always take something positive from it. We played well, and they did too. In the first half, we were very involved in the game. In the end, it was decided by small details: we didn’t take our chances, and they took theirs.”

He also highlighted the quality of the Catalan side’s midfielders, noting:

“Their three midfielders did a great job controlling the game and were the standout performers.”

The Newcastle boss also acknowledged Barcelona’s improvement in recent weeks, pointing out their fighting spirit:

“Recently, against Atlético Madrid, they showed that they never give up on a match, regardless of the score.”

The Englishman also picked out €200 million-rated Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal as a special threat that his team would be facing tonight:

“Lamine Yamal is an exceptional player whom we didn’t face in the first match. It will be a great challenge to neutralize his qualities.”

Regarding his own squad, Howe confirmed there were no new injuries and that most players are expected to be available. Speaking about Valentino Livramento, he added that the player could be included in the squad, although it may still be “a bit early.”

There is no doubt that this game is going to be a highly exciting one for neutral fans, as two good teams face off in the biggest European competition. Hopefully, Barcelona would put in a good performance to go into the second leg with an advantage.
