RB Leipzig were able to get their Bundesliga campaign off to a strong start, beating Borussia Mönchengladbach 3-0 at home on the opening weekend.
A sold-out crowd at the Red Bull Arena saw RBL assume control over proceedings early on, despite a brave start for the visitors. A well-worked give-and-go between Tidiam Gomis and Ridle Baku saw the latter bury his shot in the back of the net to open the scoring (26').
RBL emerged from the dressing room at half-time unchanged and didn't need long to double their advantage. Faced with a sea of Gladbach defenders, Antonio Nusa did well to keep control of the ball, sending his marker on the wrong foot with a stepover before placing a thunderous effort in under the bar and out of reach of goalkeeper Moritz Nicolas (49').
The 65th minute saw Christopher Nkunku enter the pitch for his first appearance since rejoining Leipzig in mid-week. The striker was on the pitch for less than a minute before playing a perfectly weighted pass into the path of Rocco Reitz, who was facing his former club for the first time since his move to RBL. The midfielder nutmegged Nicolas to make it 3-0 to the Red Bulls (66').
There were to be no more goals at the Red Bull Arena, as the hosts celebrated a comfortable win on what was Martín Demichelis' touchline debut in the Bundesliga.
