If there was one thing that stood out about last night’s Hollywood moment that Ibrox Noise was so thrilled with, it was how different it was to 2021. Back in 2021, Rangers had just won 55. Of course, we won it around March that year. Then came the summer. It was time to unfurl the flag for the 21-22 season. That season did not pan out as hoped.
However, a big occasion stood out at the start of that season, which shone a beacon on the difference between then and now. Back then, Douglas Park unfurled the title on the opening day of the season to absolutely no pomp or ceremony, literally a flagstick and a bit of string. He pulled the thing, it landed down, he walked away. That was about it. It was the most underwhelming flag unfurling that we have ever seen. It was deeply unprofessional, completely amateur, and so pathetic that it did not in any way signify the momentous occasion that was winning 55.
Compare that with the unveiling of Andreas Skov Olsen, Tuchichuk Makwani, and Tours Rommen. The way that those players were surprise presented at Ibrox to razzmatazz, publicity, excitement, fanfare. Rangers pulled off a massive Hollywood moment. Obviously, we already knew that the two others had joined, they’d been announced and that was that. but Skov Olsen had not yet been announced and was the big name.
And then to be announced a few minutes before kickoff and to be brought out to the fans in the big pomp and ceremony manner that he was done was outstanding, but it was that contrast with 55’s presentation that really screams of how badly the club let the fans down that following season. The fans were back that following season, as we recall, reduced capacity as memory serves, but either way, that moment deserved way more ceremony, fireworks, maybe even some paragliders, something with excitement, maybe perhaps the way that Hampden has its fire cannons set up before big showpiece occasions and the music. For this occasion, zero, nothing.
The contrast between the way things were done under the previous regime and the way this one is doing them really does stand out. As we said before, we are not fully won over by the 49ers Enterprises yet, Kavanagh is as yet not completely sold, but nevertheless, we have to praise that occasion. Compared with what Douglas Park did back in 2021, it’s night and day.
