When New York City FC fans knew that they would be without some of their starters against the Philadelphia Union, some probably did not think they would still be in the MLS Cup Playoffs. But the Pigeons are still fighting after the 1-0 win over the weekend.

Regardless of the result, the 2025 season has been a good one. The Boys in Blue won matches nobody thought they would win. Sure, there were a few losses and draws that should have never seen them drop points. But in the end, there is a lot that was great. And with Thanksgiving coming up, there is a lot to be thankful for.

So, here are a few reasons to be thankful for NYCFC in 2025.

Reasons to be thankful for NYCFC

NYCFC is still in the MLS Cup Playoffs: Clearly, it is obvious to be thankful for the fact that NYCFC is still in the playoffs. Again, not many would have thought that the Pigeons would be playing in the Eastern Conference Finals. Alas, they are. The fortitude and belief of the players, especially with teammates missing, is impressive. Fans can appreciate the postseason run no matter what happens.

Pascal Jansen: Life under former Head Coach Nick Cushing was not easy. Too many times, supporters found themselves complaining about his tactics, player choices, transparency, and more. But under Pascal Jansen, the complaints have declined. Sure, there is the belief that the Bonx side could be better. However, Jansen led the team to a 17-12-5 record in his first year as the head coach. Plus, he has won three of four playoff matches. He is better with tactics and in-game decisions. As such, NYCFC supporters can be grateful that he is in charge over Cushing.

Nicolás Fernández Mercau: With his recent performances, it is easy to be thankful for Nicolás Fernández Mercau. He might be the best Designated Player signing in recent years. He scored three goals in the regular season since playing his first match on July 25. Then, he awoke in the postseason, scoring twice and earning the assist on Maxi Moralez's game-winner against Philadelphia. At the same time, he does not need to get on the scoresheet to influence the Pigeons' play in the final third. He has been brilliant, and it is exciting to see what he will do with a full season in 2026.

Maxi Moralez is still here: Last year, Moralez was on this list. And thankfully, the NYCFC legend is still with the club and playing at a high level at 38 years old. Fans should be thankful that he came back, and ideally, he will play another year since he is an everyday starter. His goals and assists might have declined, but there is no question that he continues to make everyone around him better.
