£60m Brazil midfielder wants Liverpool move

Liverpool are likely to conduct a midfield summer transfer refit.

Arne Slot has been relying on the same cast of characters in midfield for a couple of seasons now - and is getting diminishing returns from some of them.

Alexis Mac Allister for example looks a long way short of his 2024/25 Premier League title-winning form. And Ryan Gravenberch isn’t putting in the kind of performances you’d expect from a £277k per week midfielder.

Factor in a complicated contract scenario for Curtis Jones - due to expire in 2027 and with no renewal on the cards - and you can see why midfield may end up being a transfer priority.

Liverpool is Joao Gomes' preferred destination

Brazilian outlet RTI Esporte is now claiming that Liverpool are leading the race for Selecao international midfielder Joao Gomes.

The 25-year-old looks certain to be relegated from the Premier League with current club Wolves and they are looking for £60m for his signature although that figure is likely to drop in talks.

“The English club initially set a price of £60 million to release the player, but the trend is towards a more flexible approach to the transaction,” the report reads.

“With the potential drop in transfer fees, this value could fall to somewhere between £40 and £45 million.”

Liverpool have been on Joao Gomes’ trail since his days as a Copa Libertadores winner back in 2022 with Flamengo. And ahead of a summer transfer scramble the report states that the player prefers a move to Anfield.

“Clubs like Chelsea, Manchester United, and Liverpool are leading the race to sign the midfielder,” the report claims.

“Liverpool has emerged as a destination that appeals to João Gomes, who has reportedly already expressed interest in playing for the club.

“Despite also attracting interest from clubs like Napoli and Atlético de Madrid, João Gomes' priority is to remain in English football.”

Joao Gomes: Situation summary

João Gomes is a 25-year-old Brazilian central midfielder for Wolves, signed from Flamengo in January 2023 and now well past 100 appearances in old gold.

Wolves handed him a new deal in April 2025, tying him down for five years plus an option, underlining how central he is to their project.

On the pitch he’s a high-energy, ball-winning box-to-box midfielder – nicknamed a “pitbull” – who thrives on tackles, ground duels and pressing rather than dictating tempo.

He covers huge distances, disrupts opposition build-up, and recycles possession with mostly short, safe passing, occasionally driving forward when space opens.

Transfer-wise, Liverpool and Manchester United have both been linked, with Liverpool long-term admirers and the player previously name‑checking Anfield as a dream destination.
