AC Milan have verified their interest in Rasmus Hojlund as Manchester United look to facilitate his exit before deadline day.

Today, Milan’s sporting director opened the door to Hojlund’s prospective arrival, telling SportMediaset: “Hojlund is a good option for us. We are thinking about him, but in the transfer market, you never know what could happen.”

It’s thought United will demand around £40 million to sanction the sale of a player they forked out £64 million for – whilst pledging an additional £8m in add-ons – just two years ago. However, Milan’s precarious financial situation has rendered them essentially unable to match such a fee this summer, so they are hoping to take him on loan before activating a buy obligation at the end of the campaign.

Hojlund has expressed his desire to remain at Old Trafford and fight for his spot on numerous occasions. Yet, the side’s acquisition of Benjamin Sesko, combined with the Dane’s lacklustre performances, means he has no leg to stand on when putting forward his case to stay put.

Across the last two seasons, he has returned only 14 Premier League goals in 62 appearances, with just four of those coming in 2024/2025 alone.

The 22-year-old’s uncertain situation prompted Ruben Amorim to leave him out of the squad for United’s opening fixture of 2025/2026 yesterday. Hojlund was in attendance at the stadium but watched on from the stands with sidelined Reds Andre Onana and Lisandro Martinez.

Amorim addresses Hojlund absence vs Arsenal

When pressed on Hojlund’s absence post-match, Amorim told reporters: “At United, if you don’t do what’s required, a teammate will take your place. I’ve made a lot of mistakes, but I’ve shown that if you deserve it, you play.”

A move to the San Siro will allow the centre-forward to ply his trade in a familiar environment, having spent one term in Italy with Atalanta before United came in for him.
