Vincent Kompany reaches the DFB Cup final with FC Bayern. After the win in Leverkusen, the coach talks about the special moment, the focus in everyday life and the next tasks.
FC Bayern won the semi-final at Bayer Leverkusen 2:0 and are therefore back in the final in Berlin. „People have been talking about Berlin since day one,“ explained Vincent Kompany after the game and added: „The fact that we can take the club there again is a huge gift.“
Despite the success, the Bayern coach made it clear how difficult it is to deal with such moments. „Everything always feels a bit distant because you have this focus on the next game,“ he said. „That’s the hardest thing in soccer because you can’t enjoy your success.“
The 40-year-old also saw two different phases in the game itself. „The first half was very good from us – high-intensity, nothing conceded,“ said Kompany. The picture changed after the break: „Leverkusen got into the game better in the second half. They made us defend deeper, but we did that well too.“
He described the decisive moment matter-of-factly: „Then we get this counter-attack that leads to a goal.“ When Harry Kane scored, the coach remained calm: „I assume it will go in,“ he said with a wink, adding: „That’s micro-watching.“
Basically, Kompany believes his team is still fully focused on the upcoming tasks. „You’re always busy with the next game,“ he emphasized, adding: „If we lose, it feels like a title for the opponent – you don’t want to give that to anyone.“ At the same time, he made it clear: „We’re still enjoying the time because it’s about titles and we’re involved everywhere.“
Ahead of the Champions League semi-final, the focus will initially be on the Bundesliga. „In theory, we switch over to Mainz,“ explained Kompany. „We have a clear routine of how we prepare games. I don’t want to change the routine because the games are so important.“ He said of the upcoming opponents: „We know PSG, but we also know how big this game is. There’s another important game in between.“
Off the pitch, the Belgian emphasized the team spirit. „For me, cohesion always comes first,“ he said, adding: „Success helps, of course, but it’s not the origin.“ At the same time, he emphasized his clear line in dealing with external influences: „We listen very, very little to what comes from outside.“ He continued: „We don’t listen to all the praise. I don’t want to hear any criticism either. I stay in the middle of these two things.“
