Manuel Akanji left Manchester City last summer to spend the 25/26 season on loan at Inter Milan. So far this season, Akanji has made 13 appearances for Inter in all competitions and he has become a mainstay of their defence. His consistent performances have impressed the Inter hierarchy and it seems to be a matter of time before the Swiss international completes a permanent move to the Serie A. In a recent interview, Manuel Akanji has expressed his desire to remain at Inter beyond this season. There seems to be little reason as to why Manuel Akanji’s wish won’t become a reality in the future.
In an interview with CalcioMercato, which was relayed by Football Italia, Manuel Akanji said he has adapted well to life in Serie A. He explained: “I feel very good. The hardest part of settling in was sorting everything out for the kids, but we’re comfortable now. Italian football is a bit different from the English game, but I’ve adapted well, it helps when you play regularly. The team welcomed me warmly, things are going great, we’re top of the table and we want to stay there.”
The versatile defender also expressed his desire to remain at Inter Milan after this season. He added: “When I left Manchester City, I organised a farewell dinner, it was really nice. I haven’t been able to say goodbye to all the staff yet, but who knows what will happen next summer. As things stand, I’d love to stay at Inter.”

It seems highly unlikely that Manchester City will stand in Manuel Akanji’s way to move to Inter Milan if the Serie A giants meet City’s asking price to sell the Swiss international. As Football Italia reports, Inter have a €15 million obligation to buy included in Manuel Akanji’s loan deal, which is contingent on certain triggers being met. It does seem that Akanji moving to Inter Milan permanently is a move that is almost certain to happen.
Manchester City does not need any more centre-backs in its squad. Pep Guardiola’s squad is stocked with experienced and youthful options and it would seem that Vitor Reis and possibly Juma Bah could have a role to play at the club next year. Manuel Akanji is surplus to requirements which isn’t a knock on his ability or contribution to the club, it’s just the reality of the situation Akanji faces.
Manuel Akanji has his heart set on a permanent move to Inter Milan. There doesn’t seem to be any reason as to why he won’t get his wish based on the circumstances that surround the centre-back position at Manchester City, and how well Akanji has played for Inter this season.
