Nico O’Reilly has now firmly established himself as Manchester City’s first-choice left-back. His strong recent form has seen him establish himself in the Manchester City starting eleven. With his size and technical ability, O’Reilly is a weapon for Pep Guardiola’s side when his team has possession. He has also shown that he is up for the fight defensively, and there is a strong argument to be made that, on form, Nico O’Reilly is the best left-back in the Premier League.
Yesterday, in Manchester City’s 2-nil win over Everton, Nico O’Reilly put in another strong performance. On top of his quality, what stood out was that O’Reilly lifted when his team needed it. That shows that Nico O’Reilly is growing in confidence as he has established himself in the Manchester City starting lineup.
Nico O’Reilly was arguably Manchester City’s best player in the first half of their win over Everton. He was getting into dangerous positions when City had possession, and he defended well when required. But in the second half, Nico O’Reilly went up a gear. He made a host of surging runs from left-back as Manchester City searched for an opening goal at the Etihad. It was Nico O’Reilly’s run from left-back that Phil Foden picked out to break the deadlock yesterday. O’Reilly surged into space on the left, received the ball and put in a sublime cross for Erling Haaland to head home. It was O’Reilly’s run that broke open the game and set City on their way. It can also be said that O’Reilly’s drive helped lift his team when they needed it yesterday.
From the moment the second half of yesterday’s match began, Nico O’Reilly looked willing to inspire his team. That speaks volumes about the temperament of a player so young. The future appears to bright for the young midfielder. Nico O’Reilly is taking giant strides as a player this season, on top of that he is also growing and willing to lift his own performance to help inspire his team.
