Belenenses have confirmed their first signing for the revived women’s team, bringing in 23-year-old midfielder Amélia Silva, formerly of Benfica. The club announced the move on Tuesday.

The Lisbon side closed their women’s section at the end of 2016/17 and are now preparing to return to competition. On social media, Silva was introduced as the first recruit of the rebooted project and presented as the face of a new chapter.

A Casa Pia academy graduate, she joined Benfica in 2018/19 while still a youth player, coinciding with the launch of the club’s women’s side. She also gained senior experience before taking on the Restelo challenge.

Silva’s career has been interrupted by two serious knee injuries. She suffered an anterior cruciate ligament rupture against Marítimo in March 2021, then sustained the same injury a little over a year later during training.

She did not return to competitive action until December 2023, nearly three years after her first lay-off, and left Benfica when her contract ended at the close of 2023/24.

Her unveiling highlighted her development at Casa Pia and Benfica, Portugal youth caps and senior experience, and cast the move as a fresh challenge at Restelo with a wish for success in blue.
