Following his time in North London the midfielder went on to play for Juventus, Rangers, and Nice before returning to Cardiff for two further seasons. Most recently, he had a brief spell playing in Mexico for Pumas.

"This has not been an easy decision to make," Ramsey said in a statement. "After a lot of consideration I have decided to retire from football."

Ramsey went on to praise Wales fans for their support 'through thick and thin' during his 86 caps for his country.

"Secondly, thank you to all the clubs I've been lucky enough to play for," he continued.

"Thank you to all the managers and staff that have helped me be able to live my dream to play at the highest level.

"And a huge thank you to my wife and children and all my family. Without you by my side throughout, none of this would have been possible."

In total, Ramsey played 634 senior games for club and country, scoring 101 goals.
