Chelsea’s game against Lincoln ended in a 2-1 win for the Blues, but it could have been very different.
In the end two goals in the second half calmed the nerves and Maresca’s side were able to play the game out pretty slowly. But he wasn’t happy at all, and admitted in his post game press conference that he had been angry at his players during the interval.
Facundo Buonanotte scores his first Chelsea goal.
“Absolutely [I was angry]. We prepared the game thinking knowing exactly the way the first-half would be,” the manager explained.
“Sometimes it’s about desire, but it’s also about experience. Jamie Gittens has never played in this kind of game, Jorrel [Hato] the same. It’s more about desire and we struggled in the first-half. If the next game in Carabao is against a League One or Two team away, for sure tonight’s experience will be good.”
We hope we do get another lower league team, and we hope we do a better job of skewering them with less effort than we did today. By then, hopefully there are some more options for the manager and the new players have bedded in.
We were pretty angry too, given how limp the showing was for 45 minutes. It wasn’t that much better in the second half, but two goals improved the mood. This was just one of those games, in the middle of a tricky period, that we needed to win and move on from.
It’s Tuesday night now – by tomorrow all anyone will be thinking about is Saturday 3pm when we face Brighton. That could be a defining game in the season as we look to shake off injury self pity and start putting some wins together.
