The 22-year-old spent a season on loan with Pompey between 2023 and 2024.

It has been an extremely quiet transfer window so far for Portsmouth, but that could be about to change in spectacular fashion as the club move for a former player.

Much of the speculation at Fratton Park heading into the summer was around manager John Mousinho, but the noise of a potential departure has faded away.

Now, Pompey can focus on player recruitment as they strive to build on their 18th-placed finish and retain their Championship status for a third successive season.

The South Coast side will certainly need a greater goal threat if they are going to move up the table, and that could come in the form of a familiar face.

Hull City are in the process of selling players to avoid breaching financial rules, with Kyle Joseph on his way to Middlesbrough for £5million, while further funds are needed.

Tigers chairman Acun Ilicali recently revealed at a fans' forum that the club needed to generate £6m by today (30 June) as they are set to exceed the Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) limit for the 2025/26 reporting period.

Now, Portsmouth are considering lodging a bid for winger Abu Kamara, who spent a season on loan at Fratton Park between 2023 and 2024, according to Hull Live.

The publication reports that Pompey have held a long-term interest in the 22-year-old's services and were keen to sign him before the Tigers swooped in to take him to the MKM Stadium in 2024.

They add that no deal has yet been agreed between the two clubs, but discussions are thought to remain ongoing, and a move could hinge on whether the South Coasters will pay what Hull want.

Why Kamara would be a solid addition for Pompey

There is no question that Mousinho needs more goals in his side after they managed 49 last season, with just five clubs scoring fewer.

Last term was not a fruitful one for Kamara, who was sent out on loan to La Liga outfit Getafe, where he made just 13 appearances after an ankle injury meant he missed four months of the campaign.

However, his record in England is promising, and Pompey supporters will remember that only too well, as he notched 20 goal contributions for the club in all competitions, his best numbers for an individual season in his senior career.

Of course, those goals and assists did come in League One, but in his last full campaign in the Championship he recorded five goals and three assists to help steer Hull clear of relegation.

Kamara's pace and directness are something that Mousinho needs in his team, and at 22, the winger still has plenty of potential to grow into a top winger.
