AC Milan president Paolo Scaroni seems determined to smooth things over with fellow rivals Inter amid growing tensions between the clubs.
During his latest interview with Corriere della Sera via FCInterNews, Scaroni addressed the recent conflict between Gerry Cardinale and Beppe Marotta.
Marotta deemed Cardinale’s recent statement ‘out of line’ after the RedBird Capital bigwig made wild accusations.
Indeed, Cardinale slammed Inter chiefs for driving the club into bankruptcy.
Meanwhile, the Nerazzurri president couldn’t let such words slide.
Marotta reminded Cardinale that Inter are the only club in the city boasting two stars on their jersey.
As a result, the conflict has escalated at the worst possible moment.
Instead of working on a joint effort to build a new stadium, Inter and Milan have wasted energy on a mindless quarrel.
Therefore, Scaroni felt the urge to interfere.
However, while trying to cool things down, Scaroni refused to forget Milan’s recent Derby della Madonnina victory.
Milan squeezed past Inter 2-1 in September, arresting a six-game losing streak against the Nerazzurri.
Marotta’s response prompted Scaroni to clarify his position and reiterate the mutual respect between the clubs.
“Cardinale, as a sportsman and not just a businessman, was referring to the previous ownership of Inter, not the current one,” he said.
“On the field, we compete and want to beat each other, as we did in the last derby.
“Sometimes we tease each other in good humor.
“But it’s clear that outside the pitch there is mutual respect and a loyal collaboration with Inter.
“After all, we’ve shared the stadium for a long time, and we are working together on a new one.
“Milan is a unique reality where fans can enjoy the derby together in a peaceful atmosphere.”
Inter and Milan will lock horns again in February.
