AC Milan and Fiorentina go head-to-head at San Siro on Sunday evening in an intriguing Serie A clash.
The Rossoneri will be looking to extend their impressive unbeaten run, whilst La Viola desperately seeks their first league win of the campaign.
Massimiliano Allegri faces a significant injury crisis following the international break, which claimed several key players. Firstly, top scorer Christian Pulisic is out after sustaining a low-grade hamstring injury while on duty with the United States. Consequently, the team expect him to miss at least the next three matches.
The manager must also cope without midfielder Adrien Rabiot (calf) and left-back Pervis Estupinan (ankle). Both players picked up injuries while representing their respective countries. Furthermore, a major doubt hangs over Christopher Nkunku, who is struggling with a toe injury.
On a more positive note, Rafael Leao is set to make his first Serie A start of the season. He returned early from international duty and appears ready. Alexis Saelemaekers is also available, although the team expect him to start on the bench.
Fiorentina manager Stefano Pioli heads into an emotional reunion with his former club, but faces a significant doubt over his main striker. Specifically, Moise Kean is in a race against time after suffering a sprain. Encouragingly, however, medical tests showed no sign of a lesion. Pioli has confirmed he will make a final decision on Kean’s availability just before the match.
Elsewhere, Pioli has received a triple boost. Defenders Dodo and Jacopo Fazzini have both recovered from their respective issues. They rejoined the group on Tuesday. In addition, midfielder Aaron Sohm has returned to full training. Therefore, all three are available for selection at San Siro.
The Rossoneri headed into the international break following a hard-fought goalless draw against Juventus. Impressively, that result maintained their strong defensive record. In fact, it was their fourth clean sheet in just six league matches, highlighting their newfound solidity under Allegri.
Before that draw, Milan had secured a crucial 2-1 victory over Napoli at San Siro. In that match, Christian Pulisic was instrumental. He set up one goal and scored another before the team bravely held on for the win with ten men. Overall, with four victories from their opening six games, Massimiliano Allegri’s side sit third in the table. They are currently just two points behind the joint leaders.
Fiorentina’s early-season form, however, is a cause for deep concern. Worryingly, the Viola are winless after six Serie A matchdays. This marks their worst start to a top-flight season since 1977.
Just before the break, they experienced another setback. They surrendered a 1-0 lead to eventually lose 2-1 at home to Roma. Unfortunately, this has become a damaging theme for the club this season. They have already dropped eight points from winning positions and are languishing just outside the relegation zone as a result. So far, their only victories this campaign have come in the Europa Conference League.
Consequently, the pressure is mounting on manager Stefano Pioli. However, his counterpart, Massimiliano Allegri, defended the former Milan coach. “Fiorentina have excellent quality, with players who can score goals,” Allegri stated. “They are also well-coached and well-organised. Honestly, they don’t deserve the points they have earned; they deserve more.”
AC Milan predicted XI: Maignan; Tomori, Gabbia, Pavlovic; Athekame, Fofana, Modric, Ricci, Bartesaghi; Loftus-Cheek; Leao.
Fiorentina predicted XI: De Gea; Pongracic, Mari, Ranieri; Dodo, Mandragora, Nicolussi Caviglia, Fazzini, Gosens; Kean, Piccoli
