Manchester United remain a dominant force in the transfer market despite not qualifying for the Champions League since 2024.
In the summer of 2024, United stunned the likes of Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain by convincing Lille prodigy Leny Yoro to move to Old Trafford.
A year later, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko turned down offers from Champions League clubs in favour of playing at the Theatre of Dreams.
Now, the club’s hierarchy have supposedly started working on signing another sought-after talent.
According to a report in Spain relayed by Football365, United have “taken the lead” in the race for Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton’s signature.
Wharton has established himself as one of the Premier League’s most reliable midfielders with the ball at his feet.
The technically gifted Englishman demands the ball in tight spaces and frequently uses his technical prowess and passing range to get Oliver Glasner’s side out of trouble and higher up the field.
The 21-year-old’s composure and passing range have also caught the attention of Real.
However, the report claims United have “shocked Real Madrid management” by taking the lead for the Palace midfield gem.
Further, the Premier League giants are thought to be “working on an offer of 70 million euros (£61.5m)” to strike an agreement with the Eagles next year. It is added such a figure would be difficult for Palace to turn down.
The report states: “Amorim isn’t content: his ambition is to make the midfield the epicentre of his tactical revolution, and Adam Wharton is emerging as the cornerstone of this new system.”
Signed from Blackburn Rovers in 2024, the England international is tied to Selhurst Park until 2029.
