Kaizer Chiefs defender Aden McCarthy has reacted to etching his name in the club's history books after scoring his maiden goal.
The 22-year-old centre-back scored the solitary goal as the Soweto giants edged Golden Arrows in their first Betway Premiership outing of 2026.
He emulated his father, Fabian McCarthy, who scored against Abafana Bes'thende in a 3-1 away win at Kings Park in Durban on 14 September 2005.
Thus, they became the first father and son duo to score for Chiefs against the same opponents in the PSL era, which commenced in 1996/97.
McCarthy junior says the goal will forever be engraved in memory, owing to its historic sense in the South African topflight and for Chiefs.
“It's quite interesting. I was two years old when my dad scored against Arrows in 2005, and knowing that I emulated him makes it historic. I was not aware that he had done that and I was not expecting that I would do the same,” he told the club's media department.
"It is amazing that my first goal happened against a team that my father also scored against, as it was my first goal for the club and will be one for the history books, one to remember. It is also ironic that before the game, my dad sent a message and said I should get on the scoresheet.
