Paulo Fonseca marked his first year at Lyon with a 2-0 Coupe de France win over Laval, his 50th match in charge and a milestone that leaves him just behind Gérard Houllier for victories at the same stage.

His reign began with a 3-2 defeat at Marseille on 2 February 2025. As reported by Le Progres, the year since has brought more successes than setbacks.

The exception was a bruising Europa League exit to Manchester United last April, 2-2 then 4-5 after extra time. He also served a nine-month Ligue 1 touchline ban, covering 24 matches, which briefly dented his image.

After 50 games in all competitions he has 33 wins, second to Houllier’s 34 and ahead of Alain Perrin and Pierre Sage on 31. His overall record stands at 13 defeats and four draws.

Under contract until June 2027, he retains the backing of the hierarchy. Matthieu Louis-Jean recently said the club have a coach of very high level. Fonseca knows fortunes can shift quickly, but for now he can savour the moment.
