After Neuer injury: Urbig goes full throttle at FC Bayern

Manuel Neuer is out injured, but his backup Jonas Urbig is taking his chance and working extra shifts at Säbener Straße on his day off

The shock came on Monday morning: Manuel Neuer is out. The FC Bayern captain suffered a torn muscle fibre in his right rear thigh in the 2-2 draw against Mainz 05. This means that the 39-year-old’s 2025 soccer year is over prematurely – bitter news for the record champions that was hardly foreseeable after the game

Neuer absence forces Bayern to act

Neuer’s injury was not noticeable during the game itself, but it only became apparent afterwards that the 2014 World Cup winner was no longer on the pitch during the traditional post-match thank-you round. It is now certain that a break is inevitable. FC Bayern are not taking any risks, especially as they are already looking ahead to the restart in January. If the recovery goes according to plan, Neuer could be back between the posts on 11 January 2026 against VfL Wolfsburg, as reported by BILD

Until then, Jonas Urbig will take over. 22-year-old Urbig will be in goal for the last Bundesliga match of the year on 21 December in Heidenheim – and has already made a clear statement

Urbig seizes his chance with extra shifts

While many of the professionals used the Monday off to regenerate, Urbig was on the training pitch at Säbener Straße. The keeper completed an intensive session with goalkeeping coach Michael Rechner in adverse conditions. The performance was impressive: only one goal conceded in the entire session, plenty of praise from the coaching staff – a performance that shows how seriously Urbig takes his role as Neuer’s deputy

It is the next step in the former Cologne man’s development. Following his move in January for around seven million euros, he is now making his fifth competitive appearance of the season. He recently caught the eye with strong long balls in the 5-0 win over Stuttgart. It will be his 16th appearance in the Bayern goal

Behind Urbig, Sven Ulreich comes on as a substitute, as talented Leon Klanac is also missing through injury.
