The 26-year-old has long established himself as one of the most complete midfielders in Serie A. Fabio Capello hailed him as an ‘out of this world’ midfielder for his ability to combine technical skills with stamina and tactical awareness, making him a desirable profile for any manager.

Atletico Madrid move from Ederson to Joao Gomes

In recent weeks, Atletico Madrid were able to reach an agreement with Ederson and his entourage on personal terms.

The Colchoneros thought that negotiations with Atalanta wouldn’t pose an issue, having already conducted several transfers in recent months with their Italian counterparts (Lookman, Ruggeri, and Raspadori). However, the gap between the two clubs was simply too signficant to be bridged.

Even though the player’s contract is set to expire in June 2027, La Dea set their asking price at €45 million (or £39m), a figure that the Spanish capital side wasn’t willing to meet.

According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Atletico decided to move on from Ederson by turning to his compatriot, Joao Gomes.

The 25-year-old has made a name for himself at Wolves, attracting the interest of several top clubs, including Man Utd, who have been linked with the player, albeit not as a first option.

The transfer market expert reveals that the ‘agreement is done’ between Atletico and Gomes on personal terms, and the Rojiblancos are close to reaching an accord with the relegated Premier League club worth circa €40 million.

Therefore, Ederson’s move to Atletico Madrid is seemingly dead in the water, giving Man Utd the opportunity to pounce for his services.

Romano weighs in on the situation, confirming once more that the Red Devils, as well as another undisclosed EPL club, are keeping close tabs on the Atalanta player.

Nevertheless, the Italian journalist believes that Ederson isn’t a top target for MUFC at the moment, but one of several names the club directors are considering.

Why Man United should accelerate their attempts to sign Ederson

While Atalanta’s asking price for Ederson might be inflated considering his expiring contract, the same can be said about the figures floated around when it comes to some of United’s main targets for the middle of the park, especially Elliot Anderson, Carlos Baleba, and Sandro Tonali.

Ederson would likely cost less than half of the aforementioned Premier League stars, with the possibility of driving the price down through negotiations with Atalanta. The Brazilian also has more experience in the Champions League, and had played an integral role in the Italian club’s Europa League triumph in 2024.

At this stage, United shouldn’t abandong their pursuit of Anderson and others, but signing two midfielders for £100 million apiece remains an improbable scenario.

Therefore, Ederson could be the ideal profile to fill one of the midfield vacancies, as he would offer important guarantees in the middle of the park, and should be able to complement Kobbie Mainoo’s skillset.
