As already reported earlier today, FC Barcelona and AFC Ajax have reached an agreement in principle over a loan deal for veteran goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

The 34-year-old club captain is not part of Hansi Flick’s plans for the future and had already spent the second half of the last season on loan at Girona.

Now, he will leave the Spotify Camp Nou once more to sign for Ajax, where he will reunite with former Girona manager Michel Sanchez.

The biggest obstacle throughout negotiations was Ter Stegen’s salary. The German ace, who still has two years left on his contract, earns close to €20 million per year at Barcelona, a figure Ajax were never in a position to cover.

As such, MARCA reports that under the agreement, Ajax will pay just over 10% of Ter Stegen’s salary, with Barcelona covering the remainder, despite reports suggesting that the Dutch heavyweights will be bearing a significant part of his salary.

Barcelona accepted that they would need to shoulder most of his wages, particularly after the their out-of-favour captain’s injury problems over the past two seasons reduced the number of clubs capable of taking on such a contract.

A similar arrangement was used during Ter Stegen’s previous loan spell at Girona, when the Blaugrana also retained the majority of his wages.

Medicals pending

The arrival of Michel as Ajax head coach has played a decisive role in the negotiations. Ajax will offer Ter Stegen the opportunity to be their starting goalkeeper, something the new manager is understood to have guaranteed the veteran star.

The deal is expected to be completed shortly, with only a few final details still to be resolved.

Ter Stegen must also undergo a comprehensive medical examination in Amsterdam to confirm he has fully recovered from his recent injury before the move is finalised.

Once the remaining paperwork is finalised and he successfully passes his medical examination, he is expected to travel immediately to Amsterdam to join Ajax’s pre-season preparations.
