Ajax v Chelsea head-to-head, from first meeting to 2025

Ajax v Chelsea lacks the historic edge of Europe’s big grudges, and has produced only three competitive meetings. According to AjaxDaily, those games span 2019 and the new Swiss-format encounter in October 2025.

The clubs peaked in different eras, Ajax’s 1970s dominance preceding Chelsea’s rise under Roman Abramovich. The Champions League now admits non-champions, which set up their first clash in 2019.

Chelsea, third in the 2018-19 Premier League, travelled to the Johan Cruyff ArenA in October 2019 for a group game. It was their first competitive meeting, and Michy Batshuayi came off the bench to seal a 1-0 away win.

A fortnight later in London, Frank Lampard’s side and Erik Ten Hag’s Ajax shared a chaotic 4-4 draw. Ajax had reached the semi-finals the previous season, but this time dropped into the Europa League, missing the knockouts by a point to Chelsea.

Chelsea were then beaten 7-1 on aggregate by Bayern Munich, who went on to lift the trophy.

Their next encounter arrived in October 2025 in the Champions League’s new Swiss system, where Chelsea won 5-1. Across their three Champions League games, Ajax have zero wins and one draw, Chelsea have two wins, with a 10-5 goal tally.
