Alan Hutton: Celtic winning the title gives Rangers an advantage in the Old Firm – I think they will win 3-2Ex-Rangers star Alan Hutton’s betting on a 3-2 Rangers win over Celtic is precisely the kind of bold prediction that can get fans riled up. For the second Old Firm derby of the season, Hutton has gone all in on his former side getting the better of their ancient rivals. It’s a fixture he knows well, having been involved in half a dozen of them as a player. And it was also his decision to buck the recent trend of low-scoring games between the sides that got us to thinking about the crazy matches we’ve seen that really lived up to the billing of the world’s greatest derby.

“It really depends which Rangers team turns up. From week to week you really don’t know what’s going to happen. I feel that when they are playing a big game like Celtic or in the Europa League, they can raise the bar and that’s the one plus side.

“Celtic have already won the league. That’s done and dusted, so how are they going to be feeling going into this game? Of course they won’t want to be beaten, but I think Rangers really have something to prove and in the last couple they’ve done really well.

“I feel maybe that gives Rangers the slight advantage even though they’ve not been playing at the highest level. So I feel at home they can get a victory and can get something because they need to please the fans. It’s not been a good season at all but I feel they’ve got enough to raise a level for the game Sunday.

“There’s definitely going to be goals because Rangers have been conceding goals for fun, I’ll go 3-2 to Rangers in an exciting game.”

But why does Hutton back Rangers? For him, the answer lies in the basic combination of firepower and resilience he sees in the squad. He believes Barry has put together a group that very well could overcome the kind of resistance Celtic will offer. This is not to say that he expects anything other than a kind of attack versus defense style of football from the two sides. In actual fact, he thinks both sides will more than likely “do some daring things” to try to make their way to glory. And at the end of it all, Hutton sees Rangers winning in what “promises to be a game full of drama, goals, and heart-stopping moments.”
