Alan Shearer has branded Cristiano Ronaldo’s strike action at Al-Nassr “bizarre”, questioning how the 41-year-old can justify refusing selection while earning over £400,000 a day, amid renewed scrutiny of his future.
Ronaldo moved to Saudi Arabia in 2023 after leaving Manchester United on a free, signing the game’s most lucrative contract. He has since ruled himself out of league matches in protest at what he sees as unfair fund distribution, and he skipped the Al-Riyadh derby.
“There's not many people on over £400,000 a day and go on strike. He's a superstar but going on strike at that level doesn't look good,” he told Betfair.
The Saudi Pro League has insisted nobody is bigger than the game, stressing that clubs operate independently with transfers funded by individual investors rather than the PIF. Its statement said he wants to win, but that no individual, however significant, dictates decisions outside their own club.
On his YouTube channel, Fabrizio Romano said Ronaldo remains upset and, according to his information, will not play a crucial game on Friday despite having no injury or fitness issue. He added that frustration centres on the Saudi group, especially the PIF, and that Ronaldo, his camp and Al-Nassr will clarify the situation.
