Gunners will be feeling heat after two huge cup defeats
Alan Shearer believes it will be “incredibly tough” for Arsenal to win the Premier League after they suffered their first consecutive defeats of the campaign.
Mikel Arteta’s side crashed out of the FA Cup in the quarter-finals on Saturday at the hands of Championship Southampton.
The Saints defeated the Gunners 2-1 at St Mary’s, with Shea Charles netting a late winner on the Hampshire coast.
It followed the Carabao Cup defeat by Manchester City before the recent international break, as Nico O’Reilly struck twice to quash any Arsenal hope of a quadruple.
Now, Shearer, the Premier League record goalscorer, has weighed in on the title conversation, admitting that the two recent losses could really dent Arteta’s men moving into the seven-game run-in.
“This is not a fluke,” Shearer said on BBC Sport. “Victory went to the better side on the night.”
After the match, Shearer added to Betfair: “After Arsenal got knocked out of the FA Cup, it will be incredibly tough for them, mentally, to go on and achieve what they want to achieve.’
“It wouldn’t surprise me if Man City won the FA Cup,’ Shearer said. ‘They’ve already got one trophy in the bag.
“I don’t think [City] are going to win the league. They can’t win the Champions League.
“‘I know they’ve got a tough draw, but I do think with their history and with their experience, they may be the favourites to win it.
“Now they’ve got through the quarter-final against Liverpool, I think they’ll win it.”
City trail Arsenal by nine points in the Premier Leagyue title race.
Pep Guardiola’s men have a game in hand on Arteta’s side, who must visit the Etihad Stadium as part of their run-in later this month.
City also benefit from no other distractions - barring the FA Cup semi-final - while Arsenal must navigate their Champions League campaign, facing Sporting Lisbon in the quarter-finals in the next few days.
