Sunderland assistant head coach Alessandro Barcherini struck a measured tone after the dramatic Tyne-Wear derby win at Newcastle, underlining that focus swiftly returns to the work behind the scenes.
Anthony Gordon put the hosts ahead early, but Sunderland rallied as Chemsdine Talbi equalised before Brian Brobbey netted a 90th-minute winner to complete a first league double over Newcastle since 2014-15. Barcherini said in a LinkedIn post that satisfaction is fleeting and preparation for the next test begins immediately.
He noted that people often see only the result rather than the unseen graft, and that his own joy comes chiefly from the work. He added that he loved the win but it is time to get back to it, while encouraging supporters to savour the moment.
The victory extended a striking pattern, with Newcastle still without a home league victory in this fixture since 2010 and winless in league meetings anywhere since 2011. Brobbey’s late strike also moved Sunderland ahead in the all-time Tyne-Wear derby wins and lifted the Black Cats above their rivals in the Premier League table.
Barcherini’s stance captured the relentlessness of the Premier League, emphasising process over celebration as Sunderland chase sustained progress.
