Flamengo and Brazil have been dealt a blow after Alex Sandro suffered a muscle issue in the back of his right thigh during Sunday’s draw with Corinthians, forcing his withdrawal from the national squad. The left-back is not expected to be sidelined for long.
According to Globo.com, tests show a grade one problem, considered mild. It is not the first time he has had this issue, and the club understand how he responds to treatment. He is also on managed workloads due to recent physical demands.
The initial return window is two to three weeks. He will undergo treatment through the international window and, in principle, could be available for the Libertadores opener away to Cusco on eight April. Flamengo then face Fluminense on 12 April.
Alex Sandro is hoping to be named by Carlo Ancelotti for the World Cup in June. Brazil have two warm-ups before the tournament, Panama at the Maracanã on 31 May and Egypt in Cleveland on six June. Both fixtures are set to feature the World Cup squad, with the list due on 18 May.
Centre-back Vitão also came off against Corinthians. In his case there is no injury concern, he felt discomfort and left to avoid hindering the team.
