Manchester United played out a hugely entertaining, albeit disappointing, 4-4 draw with Bournemouth in their Premier League clash at Old Trafford on Monday.
While the attack purred, Ruben Amorim’s tactical tweak meant the defenders remained confused, and the Red Devils gave up acres of space for the opposition to bomb forward.
At times, especially during the dying embers of the game, the contest resembled a boxing match with both sides trading punches.
The head coach is keen to avoid this, and hence, had asked INEOS for midfield reinforcements. Casemiro did score, but he does not have the legs to control the tempo of games.
When he was subbed off, Kobbie Mainoo came in and impressed with his smart creative play going forward. But he is not as adept at shielding the backline, which explains why the Portuguese tactician prefers the Englishman as a central midfielder instead.
The only natural backup for the Brazilian is Manuel Ugarte, but he has been a huge disappointment since joining the club. Playing under his former Sporting boss has done little to change his fortunes on the pitch.

There are murmurs that he could be let go in January, and the 20-time English league champions are ramping up the chase for replacements.
The likes of Carlos Baleba, Elliot Anderson, and Adam Wharton remain unattainable in mid-season, which explains why Bournemouth’s Tyler Adams had emerged as a surprise choice.
However, the US international lasted only five minutes at Old Trafford before he had to be substituted due to a knock he picked up. And his replacement, Alex Scott seems to have caught United’s eye.
The 22-year-old played for 85 minutes, completed a 100% of his dribbles while also winning seven duels while making 11 defensive contributions.
The Sun have now revealed that United have added him to their list of targets. The fact that he is only 22, has been called up to the senior England team, and is Premier League-proven only adds to his charm.
“MANCHESTER UNITED are monitoring Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott. Scott, 22, earned his first England squad call-up last month and was part of the Under 21s’ triumphant Euros squad in the summer.
“United are planning to overhaul their midfield in the summer and Scott has emerged as a potential target. Scott has started in 15 of Bournemouth’s 17 games this season.”
The former Bristol City ace joined the Cherries back in 2023 for £25 million and has since become a regular under Andoni Iraola. His current deal is valid until 2028, and his current market value stands at €30 million.
Alex Scott is likely to fetch a lot more once he does decide to move to pastures new. With United planning a midfield overhaul, the Englishman certainly fits the bill.
