Manchester United have a sizeable transfer war chest this summer following their qualification for the Champions League.
INEOS spent around £250 million last summer despite the absence of European football. As such, the expectation is that United will be able to invest even more in signings ahead of the next campaign.
However, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and company remain adamant about striking agreements on their own terms and are not prepared to pay a “United tax” to land their targets.
Manchester United pulled out of the race to sign Elliot Anderson, who is now heading to Manchester City for a record fee in the region of £130 million.
Mateus Fernandes has emerged as their priority target in recent weeks, with multiple reports suggesting he is keen to move to Old Trafford.
However, The i Paper claims United “could walk away from the deal” for the West Ham midfielder despite “stepping up talks”, as they believe the Championship outfit’s asking price is too high.
United want to remain sensible in the market, leaving Tottenham Hotspur free to sign the 21-year-old Portugal international.
According to The i Paper, United have now “turned their attentions” to Bournemouth livewire Alex Scott.
It is understood that no club-to-club contact has been made as yet, but talks are ongoing with Scott’s representatives. The 5’10” wizard has two years left to run on his contract at the south coast.
Bournemouth continue to insist Scott is not for sale at this stage.
However, it is claimed that United believe a fee under £80 million, the amount West Ham are demanding for Fernandes, could still be agreed with the Cherries for their midfielder.
The 22-year-old Englishman, who was famously called an “unbelievable player” by Pep Guardiola, is a press-resistant midfielder who likes to progress play through his magnificent dribbling.
