Alonso says Chelsea squad needs balance amid Welbeck and Henderson pursuits | OneFootball

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has refused to comment on speculation linking Chelsea with Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson but has said his squad needs ‘balance’.

Chelsea have made approaches to sign Welbeck and Henderson from Brighton and Brentford respectively, as the West Londoners seek experience.

At 35 and 36 years old, the duo represent a significant shift from Chelsea’s recent recruitment, with the Blues having had the youngest average squad age in the Premier League last season.

Speaking after Chelsea’s 6-4 win over Western Sydney Wanderers in Australia, Alonso said he would not comment on specific targets.

However, he underlined the need for his squad to have ‘proper balance in terms of qualities’ with experience on the club’s radar before the closure of the transfer window.

“I’m sure that from today until the last day of the transfer [window] there will be a lot of rumours, so to be commenting on all of them,” he said.

“It’s going to be a hard task, but for sure we need proper balance in terms of qualities, in terms of positions, in terms of balance. 

“We want to have a complete squad and we want to make a good team. For that we have an idea, we have a plan and let’s see how we set it up until the start of the Premier League.”
