Alphonso Davies: Why Bayern will “consider” selling United target

Bayern Munich could benefit from Manchester United’s short-sightedness when it comes to squad building yet again.
In the summer of 2024, United signed Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui from Bayern. The former Ajax pair thrived under Erik ten Hag in Amsterdam, leading to the Dutchman pushing for reunions at Old Trafford.
Both De Ligt and Mazraoui have performed relatively well whenever available, but their availability has become something of a luxury for the Red Devils. Their injuries have consistently plagued their United careers.
However, the club’s recruitment team say they did not see this coming, as the duo, who cost the Premier League giants north of £51 million, also struggled with fitness issues in Germany. Now, they are considering taking another such gamble.
According to journalist Christian Falk (via Bayern Insider), Manchester United are interested in signing Bayern Munich full-back Alphonso Davies in the summer transfer window.
It is claimed United are exploring the market for a new left-back as they want to bring in a quality player to challenge the ageing Luke Shaw, who remains Michael Carrick’s first-choice option out wide on the left.
The athletic Patrick Dorgu was signed to play as a wing-back under Ruben Amorim. However, United now view him as a winger due to his attacking prowess.
Falk claims United have a long-standing interest in the Bayern defender. The Mancunians were interested in signing the Canada international before, but he decided to sign a lucrative contract to extend his stay at the Allianz Arena.
At the time of his renewal, valid until 2030, Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund claimed that Davies has “become one of the best players in the world in his position at Bayern and has attracted a lot of interest.”
However, the Bavarians are now willing to listen to offers for the pacey 25-year-old, who has made just four Bundesliga starts this season due to multiple injuries.
Falk told CFBayern: “If there were an offer on the table (and don’t forget it cost Bayern a lot of money to extend Davies), there would be a discussion. But I can say right now that there has yet to be a concrete offer from Manchester United. If there’s an offer, perhaps Bayern will consider it, as the injuries keep coming.”
The £70m-rated Davies is certainly a world-class player. However, his recurrent injuries are proving to be a headache for the German giants.
As such, it would be incredibly naive of United to take that problem off Bayern’s hands with a big-money move.
