América down to two World Cup representatives

Artikelbild:América down to two World Cup representatives

América will have only two players in the World Cup knockout stage, with Uruguay’s early exit cutting their contingent.

According to Americayya.net, América initially had four call-ups: Israel Reyes with México, Alejandro Zendejas with the United States, and the Uruguay pair Brian Rodríguez and Sebastián Cáceres. Only Zendejas and Reyes remain involved.

Uruguay went out after collecting two points, drawing with Arabia and Cabo Verde, then losing to Spain.

Cáceres started throughout and was steady rather than standout, making no errors that directly led to goals. Rodríguez totalled 40 minutes, 10 against Arabia, 10 against Cabo Verde and 20 against Spain, generally underwhelming. His brighter spell came versus Cabo Verde, when he delivered a few useful balls into the box.

The Uruguay duo are expected to report back to Club América in a couple of weeks to work under new head coach Guillermo Almada. It remains to be seen if offers arrive for both, with Cáceres previously tracked by European clubs and Rodríguez of interest to teams in the Arab and Qatari leagues. A departure for either would not be a surprise, though there are currently no offers.
