Manchester United have had a dismal Premier League campaign and they suffered their 11th defeat against Crystal Palace at Old Trafford on Sunday.
The Red Devils suffered a huge setback during the game, with Lisandro Martinez picking up a serious knee injury. He won’t return until next season.
This has provided a selection headache for manager Ruben Amorim, who prefers a left-footed option on the left side of a three-man central defence.
Luke Shaw suffered a minor injury setback earlier today, but the Englishman will reportedly return to full training next week.
Shaw has also trained as a left centre-back under Amorim’s tutelage. He could be a natural replacement for Martinez for the remainder of the campaign.
If Amorim chooses a wildcard left-footed option, he could choose Ayden Heaven, who arrived from fierce rivals Arsenal this month.
Another surprise alternative could be Godwill Kukonki, but the manager may not put pressure on a 16-year-old at the current stage of the campaign.
Jonny Evans is also comfortable with his left foot, but the 37-year-old may not be a starter either. He could be restricted to cameo appearances.
If Amorim goes with a right footer at left centre-back, Leny Yoro would obviously be the first choice.
The Frenchman wonderkid has already played there when Martinez was given a breather in the 3-1 league defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion last month.
Noussair Mazraoui could also be considered. The Moroccan started as the left centre-back in the 2-0 league loss at Arsenal when Martinez was suspended.
Amorim has six options at his disposal to replace the injured Martinez. Among those, Yoro, Mazraoui and Shaw are the front-runners to fill the void.
