Ruben Amorim has rallied behind the struggling Rasmus Hojlund but admitted he has to be doing more to fulfil the role he’s been trusted with.

From now until the end of the campaign, the Manchester United No.9 will be well aware that the goalscoring responsibility is almost fully on him due to Joshua Zirkzee sustaining a season-ending hamstring setback.

As such, Hojlund is now the only out-and-out centre-forward in the squad, which doesn’t bode too well, given that he’s scored just three Premier League goals in 28 matches.

It’s also telling that United are actively scouring the market for a new striker to strengthen the position this summer – just two years after shelling out £64 million on the Dane when he signed from Atalanta. Liam Delap, who’s outscored Hojlund by nine goals in the top flight this term, is said to be INEOS’ first-choice target.

David Ornstein did suggest it’s ‘plausible’ Hojlund is offloaded in the coming months to raise funds, meaning his contract would be cut short prematurely from its 2028 expiry.

However, until then, and in the event the 22-year-old stays put at Old Trafford, he will continue to have the support of his manager and teammates to try and oversee a positive end to his sophomore season.

“A striker needs to score goals and we try to help him,” Amorim told reporters this afternoon in his pre-match press conference. “He’s trying really hard and wants things really bad. He’s improving in the small things, he needs to focus on that [and] the goals will appear.”

Up next for Amorim’s Reds is a trip to face the in-form Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium on Sunday before the first leg of their Europa League semi-final away to Athletic Bilbao on Thursday, May 1.
