Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim admitted his side were “completely lost” after crashing out of the Carabao Cup in humiliating fashion against League Two outfit Grimsby Town.
The defeat - sealed after a marathon penalty shootout - represents a new nadir in Amorim’s short reign, with the optimism that greeted the new campaign already beginning to evaporate.
United were two goals down inside the opening half hour and could easily have been three behind before rallying late through Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire, whose strikes dragged the tie into spot-kicks.
In the shootout, Matheus Cunha had the chance to clinch it with United’s fifth penalty but fluffed his lines. Every taker converted thereafter until Mbeumo rattled the crossbar, handing Grimsby an astonishing 12-11 triumph.
Reflecting on the setback, Amorim pulled no punches:
“I think this is a little bit the limit. I think something has to change.
"I think the team and the players spoke really loud today, so that's it. [Tonight] I think the best team won, the only team that was on the pitch. I think it's really clear what they spoke, so let's move on from this day. I think it was clear for everybody what happened today.
"The way we start the game without any intensity, we were completely lost. In this moment, we need to focus on the weekend and then we have time to think.”
The 20-time English champions finished 15th in the league last season - their lowest position since relegation in 1974.
With the Carabao Cup now gone, one of their few realistic routes to silverware has already vanished this season.
