Liverpool defender Andy Robertson says it was “not nice” to see Trent Alexander-Arnold booed by the supporters during their 2-2 draw with Arsenal.

With the score at 2-1 upon his arrival onto the pitch, Alexander-Arnold was subject to boos from Liverpool supporters, in response to the defender’s announcement that he was leaving the club at the end of the season.

Mikel Merino equalised three minutes after Alexander-Arnold’s introduction as the clash between the Premier League top two ended in a draw.

When asked by Sky Sports for his reaction to his teammate’s imminent departure, Robertson praised the 26-year-old for his help in developing his game during their time together.

“Disappointed to lose a good friend,” Robertson said. “He’s an amazing player and an amazing person. He has pushed me through and made me a better player. His legacy will always be there, he’s done so much for this club. He will be missed for me as one of my best friends in the game, we’ve done it all together.

“He’s took me to levels I never knew existed. It hasn’t been an easy one for Trent but he has made the decision. It was not nice to see him get booed but you can’t tell people how to feel. That’s how I feel about it and I’m not going to tell anyone else how to feel about it.

“We’re always delighted for each other with assists and contributing, it has been a huge part of our game for the eight years that we have played together. We’re always looking for each other and it was nice to see him coming up to me for once.”

After scoring two goals in 87 seconds during the first half, Liverpool appeared to be cruising to a first win against Arsenal since March 2022, but two second half goals from the Gunners secured a point for the north Londoners.

Robertson believes both teams had dominant moments during the match and that there is more for his side to improve on.

“For the first five to 10 minutes, both teams were sloppy but then we picked up and scored two good goals,” he said. “We dominated. In the second half, first 10 minutes, we were miles off it. They slowly but surely came back into the game and then we took charge again and finished strong when they went down to 10 men. 2-2, two really good teams. Still areas to work on.”
