Nottingham Forest have made a bold move by appointing Ange Postecoglou as their new manager, following the dismissal of Nuno Espírito Santo. Reported by Tom Collomosse of the Daily Mail, the announcement sparked immediate headlines – not least because of the stark contrast between the way Nuno’s departure and Postecoglou’s arrival were handled.
Nuno’s sacking was summed up in a “blunt 80-word statement”, with no remarks from owner Evangelos Marinakis. By contrast, Marinakis waxed lyrical about his new coach, praising Postecoglou’s “consistent record of winning trophies” and stressing the club’s ambition to “compete with the very best and challenge for trophies.”

The Forest owner’s enthusiasm was clear: “His experience of coaching teams at the highest level, along with his desire to build something special with us at Forest, makes him a fantastic person to help us on our journey.”
The words are telling, given that Nuno had reportedly clashed with Marinakis over the direction of the club. Postecoglou, fresh from winning the Europa League with Tottenham, brings European pedigree and the kind of charisma Forest fans have long craved.
At 60 years old, Postecoglou has proven his ability to deliver silverware in multiple environments. Marinakis also highlighted his Greek heritage, recalling how Postecoglou had proudly spoken of Greece after guiding Spurs to European glory. “[He is] a man who not only does not hide his origin but is also proud of it. What he achieved… promoted Greece,” Marinakis noted at a recent ceremony.
An important subplot surrounds his potential staff. “Mile Jedinak, Nick Montgomery and Sergio Raimundo left Spurs with Postecoglou and may rejoin him at the City Ground ahead of the trip to Emirates Stadium.” Their arrival would provide continuity and support as Postecoglou implements his methods at Forest.
From a Nottingham Forest fan’s perspective, the appointment of Ange Postecoglou feels like both a gamble and a statement of intent. Supporters are used to seeing bold moves from Evangelos Marinakis, and this is another example of him backing his instincts with conviction.
On one hand, Postecoglou’s reputation is unquestionable. Winning the Europa League with Spurs, a club not exactly known for recent silverware, was a genuine achievement. His ability to instil attacking football and a clear identity could be exactly what Forest need to step up after a season that, while strong on paper, still felt fractured behind the scenes. Fans who have grown weary of pragmatic football under Nuno will likely welcome a more expansive style.
Yet there are nerves too. Postecoglou is stepping into a squad that, while talented, still needs balance. Injuries to key players such as Taiwo Awoniyi last season exposed depth issues, and Forest can’t rely on just spirit and ambition. The Premier League is unforgiving, and while Marinakis talks about challenging for trophies, fans know the immediate priority remains consolidating top-half status.
The possible addition of Mile Jedinak, Nick Montgomery and Sergio Raimundo to his backroom staff may reassure supporters. These trusted lieutenants know how Postecoglou operates, potentially smoothing the transition. Continuity could be crucial in ensuring his attacking philosophy takes hold quickly.
There’s also the risk of expectation running ahead of reality. Postecoglou has proved himself a builder of projects – Celtic, Spurs – but will he be given the time if results dip? Forest supporters will back him, especially if he sticks to his principles, but Marinakis has shown he won’t hesitate to make changes quickly.
In the stands, optimism will outweigh scepticism. A manager with European pedigree and a reputation for fearless football is the kind of appointment Forest fans have dreamed of since promotion. Whether it leads to trophies or turbulence will define the next chapter at the City Ground.
