Angel Gomes: Marseille trying to offload ex-United midfielder | OneFootball

Angel Gomes is facing an uncertain future at Olympique de Marseille less than seven months after arriving as a free agent.

According to L’Équipe, the Ligue 1 side are looking to reshape their midfield before the end of the January transfer window, and Gomes is one of the players being pushed towards the exit.

The French outlet claims Marseille want to move the 25-year-old on in order to create space for new arrivals. Feyenoord’s Quinten Timber and Angers SCO’s Himad Abdelli are amongt the names on their shortlist.

For Manchester United fans, Gomes remains a familiar name. He was highly rated during his time at Old Trafford but left to rebuild his career elsewhere in 2020. His progress has been followed closely ever since.

That interest even spiked again recently. United had reportedly considered bringing him back before he signed for Marseille.

Marseille push for midfield changes

L’Équipe report that Marseille’s desire to strengthen the middle of the pitch is driving this situation. Essentially, the club is attempting to refresh its options before the window closes.

If Marseille succeed in landing their targets, Angel Gomes could be one of the casualties of the reshuffle.

The French transfer deadline on 2 February means the next couple of weeks could be decisive as Marseille weigh up incomings and outgoings.

World Cup hopes

It is believed Gomes would be open to a move if it helps him secure regular football.

He made his senior England debut under Lee Carsley, coming on for Kobbie Mainoo against Ireland in September 2024, before starting against Finland later that month.

With Thomas Tuchel expected to shape his squad over the coming months, Gomes will know he needs momentum to push his case for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Whether that comes in Marseille or elsewhere, his next step now feels crucial.
