Anthony Gordon has talked about Chelsea failing to buy him.
Thomas Tuchel tried to do so in summer 2022.
Newcastle the winners when they paid £45m for Gordon in January 2023.
Chelsea knocked back by Everton when having bid £60m months earlier.
Anthony Gordon asked about the then Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel trying to sign him in summer 2022:
“It was quite close to be honest.
“I was desperate to go at the time and work with him especially.
“I felt like my style would suit his style of play.
“The way he was playing at Chelsea was very exciting for me.
“It didn’t end up happening.
“It was a big opportunity for me that didn’t end up happening and I’m looking forward to getting to work with him a couple of years later [with England].
“Spoke to him after the game when Everton played Chelsea.
“I shook his hand and that was about it.
“He said some really complimentary things to me that I will keep to myself.
“I felt a lot of warmth from him, which then in turn made me really want to play for him.
“But I didn’t get that chance.”
Anthony Gordon asked about Thomas Tuchel not attending these two November England matches in person:
“He can watch the games back wherever he is in the world.
“Which I am sure he will be doing.”
Anthony Gordon on which position he prefers to play, having recently played on the right in recent Newcastle matches:
“I don’t care where I play.
“As long as I’m on the pitch, I feel like I can perform.
“That is what I want to do, perform at a high level.
“If I play there [on the right] I would be more than happy.
“As a winger, my main role is to go at players and try to cause trouble, do as much in the final third as I can.
“In an England team, your main focus is to attack, because there are very few teams where we sit back and allow them to have the ball.
“I think we are always going to try and go for it, especially under Lee [Carsley].
“That’s what we’ve done so far.’
