Anthony Patterson faces a pivotal summer as Sunderland’s goalkeeping hierarchy now favours Robin Roefs. He remains attached to his boyhood club, but a clear route to regular football does not look simple on Wearside.

According to Sunderland Echo, Patterson would prefer a permanent move if he departs, though a loan cannot be ruled out if the market becomes complicated. Sunderland value him at £8million to £10million, a sum that may stretch most Championship budgets, with hope of realism if a second-tier switch arises and Millwall one to watch if promoted via a structured deal.

Southampton are understood to be keen, although their plans could hinge on Aaron Ramsdale if they go up and he stays. Coventry City, West Brom, Hull City and Derby County are also believed to be monitoring.

Patterson, 26, graduated from the academy and helped the club climb from League One to the Premier League. He signed a long-term contract in September 2023 that runs to 2028. Any sale would be favourable for SCR as homegrown profit, though Sunderland are not expected to sell cheaply.

Roefs, 23, has impressed as number one and attracted interest, and only a major offer would be expected to prompt talks. Some suitors may prefer to watch him for another season as a Premier League starter, keeping Sunderland in a strong position under Régis Le Bris.

If Roefs were to leave, Sunderland would seek a direct replacement, which could delay any Patterson exit. Patterson is not thought to be the planned number one next season even in that scenario. Ellborg is considered comfortable cover.
