Chelsea have made their first move to sign Antoine Semenyo as they look to beat the likes of Manchester United and Liverpool to the Bournemouth star.

Standard Sport understands that the Blues have made contact with the player’s representative to confirm their interest and open talks over a January transfer.

The 25-year-old Ghana international has a £65million release clause in his contract, signed in the summer, which is active for the first ten days of next month’s transfer window.

Semenyo has been one of the division’s most in-form attackers in the first half of the season, racking up eight goals and three assists in 16 appearances for Bournemouth.

That form has prompted concrete interest from United, Liverpool and Manchester City, and now Chelsea have firmed up their intentions as they look to win what is expected to be a fierce battle for Semenyo’s signature. Spurs explored interest in the summer.

Chelsea hold a longstanding interest in Semenyo which dates back to a failed bid for the player, then at Bristol City, in 2019.

The Bournemouth hierarchy are resigned to losing Semenyo, such is the strength of interest in signing him. His release clause, structured to allow Bournemouth time to sign a replacement in the same window, is viewed by many within the game as reasonable and affordable.

Semenyo has scored three goals for Ghana since making his senior debut for the Black Stars in 2022, and he is expected to be one of their leading players at next summer’s World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the United States.
