Marcus Rashford is not the only former Manchester United winger who is excelling in La Liga this season.

One year anniversary for Antony

Despite arriving for £85 million, the second most expensive transfer in Manchester United’s history, Antony’s time at Old Trafford was a damp squib.

The Brazilian managed just 12 goals and five assists in 96 appearances for Manchester United.

There were flashes of his potential during his first season in 2022–2023.

Nonetheless, the next two seasons saw a dramatic reduction in his output, and he would be sent out on loan to Real Betis in January 2025, months into Ruben Amorim’s tenure at the club.

He enjoyed an incredible renaissance in Spain during the second half of the season, and the Andalusian side finally agreed to buy the player this summer.

Incredible form

The Spanish newspaper Marca has highlighted the incredible impact the Brazil international has had at the club since his move just over a year ago to Betis.

His time in Spain has been described as “simply spectacular. And his contribution to Pellegrini’s team achieving their objectives is crucial, with a game-changing left foot that not only provides assists from the wing but also scores goals that are worth points.”

Antony scored yet another stunning strike at the weekend against Atletico Madrid to seal a rare victory at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano.

The newspaper reports that “it was his 10th goal of the season across all competitions, six of them in LaLiga. These figures are complemented by eight assists across the domestic league, the Europa League, and the Copa del Rey, already surpassing his numbers from his first few months with the club last season.”

What’s more, “in total, in just one year at the club, Antony has amassed an impressive 19 goals and 13 assists in 54 official matches. He was instrumental in Betis securing a Europa League spot through LaLiga last season and reaching their first-ever European final, the Conference League final against Chelsea.”

Future

With Betis currently fifth in the league, Antony will be dreaming of leading his side to the Champions League next season. They are also safely through to the last 16 of the Europa League and will be plotting another European final this season.

If he continues his fine form over the course of the season, he will also surely be in Carlo Ancelotti’s thoughts for the Brazil World Cup this summer.
