Osasuna star Sergio Herrera has confirmed that he and his teammates were ready to aid their Real Madrid counterparts in efforts to have the upcoming meeting between the sides postponed.
The subject of Real Madrid’s La Liga opener has of course returned to the headlines in Spain once more over the last 24 hours.
This comes after confirmation was forthcoming that Los Blancos’ latest push to have the fixture postponed to a later date had been rejected.
This initiative came with Xabi Alonso’s squad having been afforded a heavily reduced summer break, following their campaign at the Club World Cup.
La Liga and the Spanish football schedule-makers nevertheless stuck to their guns, though, in moving ahead with plans for the outing to be played on August 20th.
And one individual left bemused by this call, as alluded to above, is Sergio Herrera.
Speaking during an interview with El Larguero on Thursday night, Osasuna shot-stopper Herrera was drawn on his side’s upcoming meeting with Real Madrid.
And the 32-year-old made use of the opportunity to confirm:
“The AFE informed us, and we were willing to help Real Madrid. Our first intention was to help; it seemed the logical thing to do, but now we just have to play.
“Beyond teams, I think about the professional colleague… if it were my case, I would like Real Madrid to understand. The Club World Cup is not a friendly match, it’s an official tournament that gives visibility to all of La Liga.
“It may be that Real Madrid are at a disadvantage, but they have an incredible squad and they are used to it. Anyone with a brain understands that the time is not enough for Real Madrid to reach 100%.”
