Are Crystal Palace in a relegation scrap?

A little over a month after sitting fourth, Crystal Palace are staring down, their form dragging them towards a relegation fight.

According to NY Times, Sunday’s 3-1 loss to Chelsea left them 15th on 28 points, eight clear of 18th-placed West Ham. They are winless in 11 in all competitions, with two points from 24 in the league, Marc Guehi has gone to Manchester City and Oliver Glasner will leave at the end of the campaign.

Defeat at Nottingham Forest on Sunday would bring Forest level, while Leeds sit two behind after drawing with Everton. Glasner said concern is justified if this continues, adding the mood has flipped from last season despite a similar position.

Since matchday 16, Palace have the fewest points and goals, the most defeats and the worst goal difference in the division. Even so, their relegation chance is put at two per cent, 15th is likeliest, and their next four fixtures are rated second-easiest.

Goals have dried up, they have not scored more than once in the league since the 2-1 win at Fulham on 7 December. Jean-Philippe Mateta has one in his past 12 but leads with 12 overall, and Forest have bid £35 million for him.

No central midfielder has scored under Glasner, the defence has one league clean sheet since 3 December, and Guehi’s exit hurts. Daniel Munoz and Ismaila Sarr are back, Eddie Nketiah and Daichi Kamada should return within weeks, and the window closes on Monday.

Palace have 28 points from 23 games, one more than at this stage last season, and victory at Forest could lift them to 12th. They have not beaten Forest in 11 Premier League meetings. Home dates with Burnley and Wolverhampton Wanderers on 11 and 22 February look pivotal, while they remain among Conference League favourites.
