Former Barcelona forward Javier Saviola believes the Catalan club would be the ideal destination for Julian Alvarez, arguing that the Argentine striker’s versatility and intelligence make him a natural fit for Hansi Flick’s system.

Speaking on Catalunya Radio’s Tot gira programme (h/t Mundo Deportivo), Saviola also analysed Alvarez’s playing style and explained why he believes the Atletico Madrid forward could reach an even higher level surrounded by Barcelona’s talented squad.

The ideal place

Dissecting Alvarez’s style of play, Saviola highlighted: “He’s not your typical lethal goalscorer. I see him as very complete; he can play on the wing, as an attacking midfielder, as a deep-lying playmaker….

“You don’t just see the goalscorer, you also see that he’s technically very good,”

As such, the former Argentina forward left little doubt about his opinion regarding his compatriot’s future.

Saviola believes the Blaugrana’s style of play would allow the forward to express every aspect of his game rather than simply being judged by his goal-scoring numbers.

“Barça is the ideal team, it can allow him to get more involved in the game, he would be surrounded by great players, giving a very high performance,” he added.

Different From Lewandowski

Saviola believes Barcelona’s possession-based football would allow Alvarez to become even more influential. He also stressed that the Atletico Madrid striker should not be viewed simply as Robert Lewandowski’s replacement.

In his opinion, the two forwards offer very different qualities, as he pointed out: “It’s got nothing to do with Lewandowski, who’s a more clinical striker.”

Lewandowski is a classic penalty-box striker who thrives on finishing chances, while Alvarez is far more mobile and involved in the team’s overall play.

Saviola on Alvarez’s best role

Asked where he sees Alvarez at his best, Saviola pointed to a role behind the main striker.

“As an attacking midfielder,” said Saviola.

“He’s very intelligent, decisive and a complete player; in that position he accelerates, turns very quickly and has excellent ball control and handling,” he added.

Although he prefers Alvarez as an attacking midfielder, Saviola believes he can perform equally well as a false nine.

“He can perform both roles equally well, which is why he’s so sought-after by managers,” Saviola noted.
