Palmeiras have set a new benchmark for Brazilian football’s costliest foreign signing after finalising a move for Jhon Arias, eclipsing the long-standing Tévez mark.
According to Globo.com, the deal with Wolverhampton is worth €25 million and beats the inflation-adjusted cost of Corinthians’ signing of Tévez by about R$ 18 million. The Corinthians record lasted 7,739 days, with their outlay of roughly R$ 43 million equating to R$ 137 million today.
Arias now ranks as the fourth biggest purchase in Brazil overall, behind Lucas Paquetá, Gerson and Vitor Roque. He was announced on Saturday and does not yet have a reporting date. The attacking midfielder was a long-term target for Palmeiras.
Head coach Abel Ferreira said reinforcements are proven on the pitch, welcomed the announcement, noted the club’s push for more solutions, and credited president Leila Pereira for a deal of this magnitude.
The Argentine Thiago Almada is third among foreign arrivals, with Botafogo agreeing a deal of 22 million dollars with Atlanta United, a figure that exceeds R$ 130 million once adjusted. A transfer ban that hit Botafogo at the start of the window over issues linked to the agreement was lifted on Friday after an understanding was reached, allowing new registrations.
Flamengo are the only club with two names on the list, Arrascaeta and Alcaraz. The Uruguayan has been the team’s star since 2019 and has collected titles, while the Argentine did not establish himself and made 19 appearances.
