Arne Slot has left Liverpool with immediate effect after a disappointing second campaign, and will not lead the team next season. He won the Premier League in 2025 in his first year in charge.

The club said in a statement that the process to appoint a successor is under way, thanked the 47-year-old for his rigour and expertise, highlighted his compassion after Diogo Jota’s accidental death in July 2025, and stressed that change was necessary and the decision not taken lightly.

Liverpool finished fifth in the Premier League just ended and secured Champions League qualification on the final day after 12 league defeats.

They were beaten 4-0 by Manchester City in the FA Cup and 3-0 by Crystal Palace in the League Cup. PSG won both legs 2-0 in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Supporter discontent grew over his handling of Mohamed Salah, his overly optimistic messaging, and the team’s underwhelming football.
