Gerrard scored 10 times and registered eight assists in 27 matches against Newcastle. From his first goal in 2005 to his legendary two goals and two assists at St James' Park during a 5-1 rout in 2008/09 and his stunner from a free kick in 2007/08, Gerrard lives for these moments.

Even after coming back from a long injury in 2011/12, it was against Newcastle that Gerrard netted his first goal back after months out injured.

He simply lived to break Geordie supporters' hearts.

Those years with the adidas Liverpool shirt, wearing the no.8 on his back and making those important contributions, the Reds had a vintage Gerrard at his peak.

Now though, there is finally a man at Anfield who is ready to be the successor to the throne. Someone who seems capable of carrying the weight of expectations that come with being Gerrard's heir.

On Monday night against Newcastle at St James' Park, Liverpool probably faced their toughest test of the season.

They are unlikely to come up against such a hostile crowd, riled on by the fury directed towards the club over their innocent pursuit of Alexander Isak.

Newcastle wanted to win this game badly and they gave it their absolute all.

But one man simply didn't let them.

Wearing the no.8 on his back, Dominik Szoboszlai was superb. He was voted the Man of the Match, and he deserved it.

His brilliant dummy from Mohamed Salah's pass ultimately created the chance for Rio Ngumoha to strike a historic and memorable winner.

But it wasn't just that moment. It was everything. They way Szoboszlai covered every blade of grass.

How he was asked to put a shift in at right-back and how he delivered without a moment of doubt.

Slot's decision to play him in that right-back role pretty much confirms that Szoboszlai is the new Gerrard.

Everyone talks about the long-shots that Gerrard scored over his career. But in reality it wasn't the goals that made him adored on the Kop, it was his ability to work and work, and give it his all every second that he spent on the pitch.

Like Szoboszlai, Gerrard played everywhere. He'd put a shift in at right-back when he needed to and he ran around and produced one masterclass after another.

In his last outing against Newcastle in the Premier League, Szoboszlai scored. In three starts, he's never lost to the Magpies in the league.

So, now he's well and truly following in the footsteps of the club's biggest icon. The no.8 shirt has finally found its rightful heir.
