In a recent report, journalist Steve Kay stated that Arsenal are keeping tabs on Mainz striker Nelson Weiper. It has been claimed that the Gunners are eyeing a move to bring the German centre-forward to North London in this summer transfer period.
Weiper caught the eye at times with his performances as the spearhead of Mainz’s attack in the previous campaign. The German attacker found the back of the net four times and earned a couple of assists in 28 appearances for the German outfit last season in all competitions.
The 20-year-old deserves a lot of credit for averaging 2.81 shots per 90 minutes in the Bundesliga. He kept 54.5% of his attempts on target. However, Weiper needs to improve his ball distribution after completing 67.1% of his attempted passes in top-flight football (stats via fbref.com).
Weiper is under contract at the German club until the end of next season which could open the door for Arsenal to land him on a cut-price deal this summer.

Weiper excels at finding some space for himself to get a few shots in at goal. He has got the vision to engineer the odd chance for his teammates in the final third and is a good dribbler with the ball at his feet.
Standing at 1.92m, Weiper can use his strong frame to win a few 50-50 aerial duels for his team. However, he is still quite inexperienced at the highest level and would need time to prove his worth in the Premier League. Plus, the German sensation needs to find a way to improve his link-up play in the opponent’s half.
Weiper would undoubtedly enhance the quality of Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta’s attack in the long run. He is good enough to serve as a decent, rotational piece in the North London club’s squad.
At 20, the future looks quite promising for Weiper as long as he continues to improve with each season. He is undeniably a prospect to watch out for in the future. Thus, the Gunners would be wise to move in for him before the end of this summer transfer window.
